Review first published on my blog The Fictional ReaderI love this book because it’s the story of two sports editors. They are both applying for the same job. Cole feels like he earned the job already because he’s been freelancing for the magazine for years. Penelope has been a sports journalist for years. She moved to New York to get a fresh start. And what better way to get started than as the senior sports editor of Oxford?
I really enjoyed this book because it wasn’t just them in a rivalry. The job situation gets resolved quite early on in the book, and the find themselves working together. I loved how they worked quite well together. There was mutual respect and discussion, everyone was open to hearing each other’s ideas. I know that’s how it should be, and it shouldn’t be something to remark on, but I feel like in sports journalism, it might still not be that easy.
The only thing I didn’t like was when Cole first met Penelope. He was in awe because a woman was writing down something in a notebook during a baseball game. Then he was elated because she was eating a hot dog, which he had never seen a woman do. How can that be? Do women not eat hot dogs in New York? I have no idea. But he got that kick in the guts when he introduced himself and found out she’d be his rival for the job. He didn’t underestimate her again. I’m grateful that happened in the beginning.
I really want to read the third book in this series (?) because that one features Lincoln. I’m so intrigued by him.

Oh the men of Oxford *rawr*…but don’t let the title fool you, if you enjoyed your time in the Stiletto world than this will be right up your alley. We might have changed magazines but the things that haven’t changed are the characters, the banter, the humor and the sexiness.
Cole as the charming sexy womanizing side character in the Stiletto series is even Sexier in his own book. He is who he is and sometimes it is a little crass but it is always honest and charming.
Up for the same job Penelope is Cole’s competition but he really can’t seem to get his head around her. He is used to long legged models that pout and play games. So what do with a straight shooting girl that tells it like she sees it? How do you play the game when the competition is nice to you and not really attracted to you?
***“But you’re still not feeling the pull, huh?”
Penelope took a sip of beer. “Are you?”
He blinked in surprise. “What?”
She shifted in her barstool to face him. “Take it all in. Are you feeling light-headed?
Dazzled by my feminine charms?”
“Ah—”
“Exactly,” she said, looking strangely satisfied with his nonreaction. “You’re out of my league, Sharpe”***
O.o Cole have you just been put into the Friend Zone??? Has that ever happened to you before???
I love how Penelope was so different from every other woman that Cole has had in his life and it took him some time to figure out that he isn’t going to win her with flirty banter, flowers and chocolates. Well game on and Challenge Accepted.
Penelope is totally the girl next door, the girl you grew up talking about all your relationship woes too. She has been in the ‘Friend Zone” so many times that she has pretty much accepted that is where she belongs. No one has ever made her feel sex or pretty but she isn’t the boo hoo type, she’s the so were just friends but I’ve got some great people to hang out with type. She’s perky happy and just plain down to earth SO I LOVED HER and I was so glad that the ladies of Stiletto wanted to adopt her.
***“I think that you pretend you don’t want to be wooed, because no one’s made the effort, and deep down, you’re terrified that nobody ever will.”***
Besides loving the chic flick feel of the growing relationship between Cole and Penelope I was so happy that even though this is Oxford #1 we still get so see all my favorite characters from Stiletto 1-4. So we might be hanging out at the men’s magazine but the girls from Stiletto are present and accounted for.
***Julie’s nose scrunched. “But he came here with you tonight, even though we made it perfectly clear that we weren’t trying to make this a couples thing.”
“Lies!” Riley said. “We’re totally trying to make it a couples thing. We just didn’t know Lincoln or Cole, so we brought both. Ooh, maybe they could mud-wrestle over you!"***
There are even a few hints into what might be haunting Lincoln’s past…I still want to know how the guy stays friends with every woman he dates/sleeps with/meets. Alex, Jake and Mitchell round out the boys side casting.
I had so much fun in this story. Sure you know that Cole at some point will be a complete idiot and the gang will try and help along the way but every step of the journey was entertaining and I was so happy when even some of the cheesy stuff came towards the very end.
I’m already looking forward to the next in this series.
I can't say enough about this novel and how wonderful the story is. I have read almost all of LL's novels and there hasn't been one I didn't enjoy yet. However, I was very hesitant to read this one; the story line just didn't really intrigue me. The synopsis's description of Penelope left me almost dreading this story, yet I have loved LL's other novels so much that I told myself I should give it a chance, not expecting much. The idea of a true tomboy left me with visions of a cold, hard, rough and overwhelming female lead but that was not at all Penelope. She was cute and sweet, innocent and shy, very much the girl next door. By the end of the novel, I was in love with both Cole and Penelope. This has become one of my favorite novels of all time as far as romance goes. Can't say enough about this story and the depth to these two characters. Secondary characters will leave you laughing so hard as well. The guys especially had such a fun dynamic that you really just want to be friends with all of them. You will love this story!
