Jem and the Holograms Volume 1 Showtime Kelly Thompson Sophie Campbell 9781631403958 Books

*Jem and the Holograms* is based on the 1980's series of the same name. I remember fondly watching the series when I was kid and I did enjoy it. It was, I suppose, a "girls' show", but who cares. It was fun and that was why it was worthwhile to watch.

The story in the comic is similar, but updated for the 2010's. The wealthy heiress, Jerrica Benton, is terminally shy and can't sing in public for the life of her. Even though she has a fantastic voice - and all around fantastic musical talents. Thus she can't really join with her sisters in a band. The solution is discovered in the tech her late father left behind. Some type of wealthy genius, he programed a holographic AI to do all sorts of things, including creating a hologram for Jem. I don't know why he did that, but he did. Thus, hiding behind her hologram's ficitonal persona, Jerrica sings as lead in Jem and the Holograms. The irony of the name is lampshaded in the story itself.

What I liked was how the characters are good guys and it's easy to cheer for them. I also love the gorgeous art. The panels were a delight to look at. Oh, the story was also campy and cliched, which is okay as that is how it was in the original animated run. The insane villainous nature of Pizzazz was just as campy as in this, *The Karate Kid* and other examples of extreme, ill-founded yet over-the-top villainy found in some '80's shows and media.

Only thing I was hesitant about was that this felt more grown-up than I remember. Like it wasn't designed for a anew generation of young girls (and boys), but adult readers. That's not a bad thing, but it was different than the original one. A different vibe, if you will. And that's not a reference to the new iterations of some characters as gay, which I do like as a move for inclusion, if handled right. This comic handled it right. It's just a vibe to it that is more adult.

Despite that small caveat, I did enjoy it. Not as much as I wish I had, but enough to look forward to future volumes. Great comic.

Rating: 4 Stars.

Jem and the Holograms Volume 1 Showtime Kelly Thompson Sophie Campbell 9781631403958 Books Reviews

It's definitely a new take on Jem, and some characters have been greatly altered, but I found this book pretty enjoyable and updated for modern readers and fans of the 80's show. The artwork is really fun and all the girls are super cute.
I love this so much. The BEST reboot Jem could have possibly gotten!
What an exuberantly fun reboot this is! It’s true to the elements that made the show so enjoyable while introducing some fun new notes. Campbell’s art is especially great -- it’s color-drenched and gorgeous with a focus on fashion and the female form that I found very appealing. Highly recommended.
So great! As a woman who was a girl in the late 80s and had the dolls and watched the show on TV and was pretty well obsessed with them and who also became a blue-haired guitar player in a mostly girl band at one point, this was such a breath of fresh air. I loved what they did with Kimber and Stormer especially~! ^__^ And I can't wait to find out what tragic crap Pizazz has in her past that makes her such a rage queen.
While at first I wasn't sure what to expect with this newly rebooted series, my fears were easily quelled when I saw the expressive artwork from Sophie Campbell. All of the characters have been updated with diverse body types and personalities. Whike not the same as the original cartoon it's a fresh take on a beloved franchise. Storywise we're introduced to different dynamics than he show as well and that's ok. I found myself like the Misfits more. I definitely want to get the next trade.
As a CRAZY obsessive JEM fangirl, I was SO EXCITED when I heard this book was in the works. And it exceeded all of my expectations. The updates to the story to bring it to a new, 21st century audience are grounded in the same character dynamics and complex relationships between women as the original. I read it cover to cover in a single night, and then flipped back to the beginning and read it again, to catch all the stuff I'd missed! I particularly love Kimber and Stormer, reframing Jem and Pizzazz' rivalry in ways that really give so many fantastic story opportunities, and the new additions to the JEM universe like Blaze!
I have been waiting for this comic for years.

Jem and the Holograms was a staple of the 80's. Jerrica Benton creates her alter ego Jem with the use of a hologram program named Synergy. Along with her sisters Kimber, Aja and Shana, they become a colorful musical girl group. Their adventures were always truly outrageous and usually involved them battling against the sinister Misfits.

This comic stays true to Jem. While it has a few changes, they are all for the better. The charecters are more fleshed out and given some depth. Even the Misfits have some personality besides being just the villains. Who anyone who loved the show or enjoys bright, poppy adventures, this comic is for you.
